OMTech Aurora vs xTool Apparel Printer Plus

Three things, checked August 13, 2026: 1) Architecture — the xTool Apparel Printer Plus ($5,399) is an all-in-one that prints, powders, shakes, and cures in one machine, while the OMTech Aurora D1 Pro ($4,199.99) is a printer that needs the Shaker & Dryer bundle ($5,699.99 total) for the same complete workflow. 2) Software — OMTech lists OMTech Print / Honsonsoft RIP for Windows, while xTool Studio supports Mac and Windows. 3) Printhead care — the Plus adds 45–65% printhead-zone humidification, a HydraFlow white-ink damper, and automatic wet capping. Both use dual Epson i1600 printheads and publish 720×1800 DPI; OMTech advertises up to 15-inch width and xTool advertises 14 inches.

For a complete out-of-the-box DTF line at current pricing (checked August 13, 2026), the math is closer than it used to be: xTool Apparel Printer Plus is $5,399 all-in-one, while the Aurora D1 Pro with its Shaker & Dryer bundle is $5,699.99. Choose the Plus for Mac support, integrated workflow, and printhead-protection features; choose Aurora if you are on Windows, already own a shaker/oven (D1 Pro printer-only is $4,199.99), or want the budget single-head D1 at $2,599.99 and can live with ~11 sq ft/hr.

No — and the difference matters. The base Aurora D1 ($2,599.99, checked August 13, 2026) runs a single Epson F1080 printhead at roughly 11 sq ft/hr and 720×1440 DPI. The D1 Pro ($4,199.99) runs dual Epson i1600 printheads at roughly 50 sq ft/hr and 720×1800 DPI. Only the D1 Pro is in the same speed class as the xTool Apparel Printer Plus; the base D1 is a budget machine for lower volumes.

Not new from xTool — as of August 2026, xTool's US store sells only the Apparel Printer Plus, and the original's product pages have been retired. Existing original owners get a free Upgrade Kit (the internal humidity module and white-ink damper, about $128 retail) via an emailed code, with shipping fees still applying. Both manufacturers strongly recommend using their official inks. OMTech 'strongly recommends' Aurora ink to avoid issues (per Kickstarter FAQ). xTool explicitly states 'use ONLY xTool DTF film and inks' for optimal quality. While third-party inks may work, using them could void warranties and cause printhead issues. The 'open vs closed ecosystem' distinction is less absolute than often claimed.

Cost per print varies significantly based on artwork complexity, white ink density, and actual consumable prices paid. xTool ink (500ml bottles at ~$69 list, sometimes $39 on sale) translates to $78-138 per liter. OMTech Aurora ink pricing depends on bundle purchased. Actual savings depend on usage patterns and whether you strictly follow manufacturer ink recommendations.

OMTech's current Aurora D1 series product page advertises up to 15-inch roll-fed printing. xTool advertises a 14-inch print width for Apparel Printer Plus. They occupy a similar full-size garment-transfer class, but the published width labels are not identical.

The Aurora D1 Pro and xTool Apparel Printer Plus are both listed at 720 × 1800 DPI. The base single-head Aurora D1 is listed at 720 × 1440 DPI, so it should not be assigned the Pro model's resolution.

Both printers require daily maintenance: shake white ink to prevent titanium dioxide settling, run nozzle checks, and verify ink flow. Weekly: clean the capping station and wiper blade. OMTech Aurora features active stirring motors. xTool has '24/7 Smart Cycle' background maintenance. Neither eliminates the need for regular user intervention.

OMTech lists OMTech Print / Honsonsoft RIP and Windows-only operation for the Aurora D1 series. xTool Studio supports Apparel Printer Plus on Mac and Windows and includes the DTF design, RIP, layout, and machine-control workflow.
