The Bambu Lab A1 is the printer that finally got me into 3D printing.

My answer

I avoided 3D printing for years because I expected another tinkerer's machine—more troubleshooting than making. The A1 changed that. Mine just works, I love it, and it is the first printer I recommend. Adding the P2S expanded my shop; it did not replace a failed A1.

Why it took me years to buy one

The A1 came after years of building things the hard way.

I made an ugly planter on a Philadelphia fire escape, then a full-size arcade cabinet on a small balcony. Woodworking led to a K40 laser. By the time I looked at 3D printing, I had no appetite for another machine that needed more fixing than making.

Then I tried the A1

Setup stopped being the whole hobby.

I handled the small assembly and calibration steps, sent the print, and watched the machine do what I bought it to do. That sounds ordinary now. At the time, it felt enormous.

Why I waited

I already knew what a tinkerer's machine could demand.

The K40 often gave me more troubleshooting than project results. Early consumer 3D printing looked like the same bargain: learn the machine, fix the machine, tune the machine—and then maybe make the part.

The “Bambu moment”

Other tool companies borrow that phrase for a reason.

When a laser or another maker tool promises its “Bambu moment,” the company is trying to say the same thing: this is when the equipment stops asking you to enjoy troubleshooting before you can enjoy the work.

That praise makes sense to me. Bambu did not invent the idea of 3D printing, but my A1 made it feel accessible: unbox it, handle the small setup steps, and start watching a useful object appear. For the price, that still makes me giddy.

The useful part is often small: a bracket, a spacer, or the organizer I could not buy in the right shape.

Would I recommend it?

Yes. The A1 is still my first-printer pick.

I love this machine. It lowered the cost and the aggravation of finding out whether 3D printing belonged in my workshop. The answer was yes.

You want an approachable open printer for useful everyday filament work.

Bambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as the A1's ideal material lane.

Know this first

It is open-frame, and not every material or workspace belongs in that lane.

Check the exact filament guidance, ventilation needs, and complete setup before buying around a material the A1 was not built to prioritize.

Family boundary

Easy to use does not mean toy.

An adult should operate the printer or supervise directly. Keep children away from hot and moving parts, choose materials carefully, and follow Bambu Lab's placement and safety guidance.

Each option carries its own checked date. Prices and stock can change, so verify the current option and cart before buying.

Do you want AMS Lite in the first box?

The A1 itself is the easy recommendation. The part worth slowing down for is the bundle. Expansion, not correction

The P2S joined the A1. It did not rescue me from it.

Bambu earned my business with the A1. I reserved the P2S because I wanted to keep exploring the technology and expand what the shop could do.

What about the newer A2L?

It is a larger A-series addition—not the machine that made my A1 obsolete.

Bambu launched the A2L for buyers who want a larger open-frame workspace. On July 29, 2026, the official U.S. store showed $469 base, $569 Combo and $629 Cutting Full Combo options.

My final take

The A1 made me giddy because it let me focus on the object coming off the bed instead of proving I could keep another machine alive. I love it. If you are looking for a first 3D printer, it is still where I would start.

Would I buy the A1 as a first 3D printer?

Yes. I love mine, and it is still the first printer I recommend when someone wants to enter the hobby without making printer troubleshooting the main event.

Did the P2S replace my A1?

No. I bought the P2S to add an enclosed CoreXY machine and the AMS 2 Pro workflow. The A1 still has a useful place beside it.

Is the A1 a children’s toy?

No. It is a machine with hot and moving parts. An adult should operate it or supervise directly, choose materials carefully, and follow Bambu Lab’s placement and safety guidance.
