What a 3D Printer Costs After You Open the Box

The printer is the easiest number to find because it is printed in big type on the product page. The rest arrives one spool, tool, replacement part, wash container, failed print, and hour of cleanup at a time.

The short answer

A complete 3D-printer budget includes the exact printer or bundle, the support equipment it requires, materials and failed prints, usable space, setup and monitoring time, finishing and cleanup supplies, maintenance, and replacement parts. Make that list for the filament or resin process you plan to use before setting the printer budget.

List the equipment and supplies that come after the printer.

Sometimes that first box covers most of what you need. Sometimes it needs an enclosure, dryer, wash station, cure station, storage, tools, and enough free bench to turn the room into a small argument. The material, finish, and number of failed attempts all change the answer.

I would rather leave a dollar blank than pretend every shop needs the same enclosure, dryer, wash station, cure station, spare nozzle, resin tank, or safety setup. Use the checklist below, then add current prices for the exact equipment you are considering.

Filament

Resin

Plan for the printer, resin tank, build platform, and whatever removal, washing, drying, and curing equipment the selected system calls for.

02Bench space, access, and room conditionsWhere will the printer live, and where will the rest of the job happen?
Filament

Leave room for the printer, spool path, service access, material storage, and part removal, plus any ventilation or temperature conditions named by the manufacturer.

Resin

Make room for the printer, wash and cure stations, part removal, cleanup, resin and solvent storage, and waste handling required by the materials in use.

Filament

Filament, purge and failed prints, build-surface supplies where used, supports, desiccant or drying supplies, and wear items.

Filament

Prepare the model and slicer, choose the material profile and supports, check the build surface and filament path, and make the first layer repeatable.

Resin

Prepare the model, orientation, and supports; choose the material; check the printer, tank, and build platform; then follow the instructions for that resin.

05Watching the print and recovering from failureWhat will you do when a print goes sideways?
Filament

Allow time for first-layer checks, feed problems, interrupted jobs, failed parts, profile changes, nozzle or build-surface recovery, and another attempt.

Resin

Allow time for print inspection, tank checks, failed-part recovery, cleanup of contaminated surfaces, any required material filtering, and a safe restart.

06Work after the printer says it is doneWhat still has to happen before you can use the part?
Filament

Cool and remove the part, clear supports, brims, or rafts, finish the surface if needed, test the fit, and revise the model when it misses.

Resin

Remove, wash, dry, and post-cure the part, then clear supports and finish the surface using the instructions for that material.

07Cleaning, wear, and replacement partsWhat will need cleaning, inspection, or replacement after regular use?
Filament

Expect to inspect or replace nozzles, build surfaces, cutters or feed parts where fitted, lubrication and cleaning points, material-path components, and other model-specific wear items.

Resin

Expect tank films or tanks, build platforms, wash material, cure equipment, tools, contaminated-surface cleanup, and other system-specific maintenance items.

Two routines, two complete lists

Filament and resin need different extra equipment and supplies.

With filament, the extra spending often follows material storage and drying, build surfaces, nozzles, supports, failed prints, and mechanical wear. Resin adds the removal, washing, drying, curing, cleanup, and contaminated-material supplies required by the chosen system.

These lists are not price quotes. They are the things I would put on paper before choosing a setup from the printer price alone.
