LightBurn in 2026: learn the right workflow before the first cut

LightBurn is powerful laser software, but it is not automatically the right path for every machine. This guide separates the current official release, what LightBurn 2.2 changed, Core vs Pro licensing, xTool Studio caveats, and a safer first-project workflow.

The Quick Answer

As of October 19, 2026, LightBurn 2.2.00 is the current official release; it replaced 2.1.04 that day, and its new True Nest tool is Pro-only. Use Core for GCode lasers, Pro for DSP/Galvo. For xTool (checked October 22, 2026): xTool says nine F1, F2 and P2-series lasers connect to LightBurn over the network on their latest firmware with LightBurn 2.2.00 or later, and LightBurn lists that support as a Labs feature. On October 21 LightBurn called its F2 support preliminary, said camera support is not currently available on machines running xTool's latest firmware and said it is exploring P3 and X1 support, while xTool said X1 compatibility is planned. LightBurn's docs still carry a June 29 notice telling owners of most of those models to hold off on firmware updates, and the P3 stays xTool Studio only.

Version status

Current LightBurn status: 2.2.00 is the official release

LightBurn 2.2.00 left Early Access on October 19, 2026, after eight release candidates. LightBurn still marks several 2.2 features as Labs work, including its Epilog and xTool support, Camera Print and Cut and the REST API, and describes Labs features as new tools still in development. The conservative shop move is to open a few real projects in 2.2 and test any Labs feature on scrap before a deadline job.

Official release

LightBurn 2.2.00

LightBurn made 2.2.00 its official release on October 19, 2026: its release server now points its latest release to 2.2.00, with files dated that day, and its announcement opens 'LightBurn 2.2 is out now!' (checked October 19, 2026). LightBurn's license FAQ says a key cannot run versions released after its update period ends, so check your update period before you install it.

Previous release

LightBurn 2.1.04

LightBurn 2.1.04, a patch release published August 11, 2026, was the official release until October 19, and LightBurn's release server still lists it. 2.2 went through Early Access first, from a post dated September 16 through RC-8, the last release candidate, posted October 16. I would still open a few real projects in 2.2 before running it under a customer deadline or on expensive material.

Labs and Pro

Some 2.2 tools need Pro or more testing

True Nest is the first LightBurn design and layout feature limited to Pro licenses; Core users can try Pro for two weeks from License Management. LightBurn marks its Epilog and xTool support, Camera Print and Cut and the REST API as Labs features, which it describes as new tools still in development. Check LightBurn's Core vs Pro comparison before buying a license specifically for nesting.

Software role

What LightBurn is, and what it is not

LightBurn is layout, device-control, and production workflow software for supported laser controllers. It helps you create vectors, assign layer operations, tune speed and power, preview jobs, manage material libraries, calibrate cameras, and reuse repeatable shop files.

It is not universal magic. Compatibility is controller-based, not brand-name-based. A laser can be mostly compatible while still missing cameras, accessory control, extended axes, rotary behavior, or vendor-specific automation.

Licensing

LightBurn Core vs Pro, pricing, updates, and OS support

The most expensive LightBurn mistake is not the license price. It is buying the wrong license tier for your controller, then discovering that your machine, OS, or camera path does not match the workflow you expected.

LightBurn Core

Core is the practical default for GCode-based hobby and entry-level machines. That includes many GRBL, Marlin, Smoothieware, FluidNC, grblHAL, and xTool-style GCode workflows when the specific model is supported.

Official pricing page showed $99 USD during the May 14 source check.

LightBurn Pro

Pro adds DSP and Galvo controller support on top of GCode. It is the tier to check for Ruida, Trocen, TopWisdom, EZCAD2, EZCAD2 Lite, BSL, and similar production or galvo workflows.

If you are reading this because you are evaluating DSP-class OMTech machines, jump next to OMTech Pro Quantum for the current RF production lane.

Official pricing page showed $199 USD during the May 14 source check.

Updates and seats

LightBurn is sold as a perpetual license with one year of updates included. After the update year expires, you can keep using the newest version released during your valid update period.

LightBurn's May 2026 renewal messaging listed a $40 USD update-year renewal and early-renewal bonus months.

Operating systems

Current LightBurn 2.x support moved to modern Windows and macOS. LightBurn 1.7 is the fallback branch for Linux, pre-Windows 10, and older macOS systems.

Check your OS before upgrading a shop machine that already runs an older stable install.
Compatibility

Controller compatibility beats brand-name shortcuts

Start with the controller family, then verify the exact model. LightBurn's own compatibility language separates high, medium, low, and incompatible support levels, and partial support can still mean missing cameras, axes, or vendor automation.

Bambu Suite sends that G-code to the R1, per Bambu's guide, which also asks for the latest licensed LightBurn and an imported R1 device profile.Keep Bambu Suite at the center. Bambu's October 22 guide limits LightBurn on the R1 to flat (plane) jobs that you export as G-code with Bambu's R1 profile and send from Bambu Suite; detail capture, work-area calibration, curved-surface and rotary work stay in Bambu Suite. LightBurn calls its R1 support initial and plans direct control for 2.3, with no date.

Bambu's guide 'Starting an R1 Job via LightBurn Slicing', published on its wiki on October 22, 2026, says LightBurn supports only plane machining on the R1 and does not fully support all R1 features; its examples are detail capture, work-area calibration, curved-surface machining and revolve-shape machining, and it says to turn rotary off before exporting G-code. Its steps import an R1 device profile into LightBurn, set the processing height by hand or from a Bambu Suite measurement, save the job as G-code, send it to the R1 from Bambu Suite (File, Import, Send Print File) and start it with the machine's button. The guide gives the profile two file names, one ending .lbvendor on the attachment and one ending .lbzip in the import step. Nobody at The Crafty Catsman has used LightBurn with an R1.
Reader takeaway
Keep Bambu Suite at the center. Bambu's October 22 guide limits LightBurn on the R1 to flat (plane) jobs that you export as G-code with Bambu's R1 profile and send from Bambu Suite; detail capture, work-area calibration, curved-surface and rotary work stay in Bambu Suite. LightBurn calls its R1 support initial and plans direct control for 2.3, with no date.

xTool Studio/XCS vs LightBurn in 2026

For most newer xTool owners, start with xTool Studio, not old XCS. xTool describes Studio as the newer platform developed from XCS, says XCS V2.7 was the final XCS version, and says future devices and updates move to Studio.

Important xTool caveat: LightBurn support varies by xTool model. Some xTool machines work well in LightBurn, some work only partially, and some newer models are Studio-only. Always check the model-specific xTool support page, your firmware version, and LightBurn compatibility status before buying or switching software.
Firmware change, checked October 22, 2026: xTool says nine of its F1, F2 and P2-series lasers connect to LightBurn over the network on their latest firmware with LightBurn 2.2.00 or later, and 2.2.00 became LightBurn's official release on October 19. LightBurn calls its xTool support a Labs feature that still needs testing, and its documentation still carries its June 29 notice telling owners to hold off on firmware updates. On October 21 LightBurn and xTool both said camera support is not currently available on machines running xTool's latest firmware, so if you take the network path, plan camera placement in xTool Studio. Before you update a machine's firmware, check that your license's update period covers October 19, 2026, install 2.2 and test it on your own files; if your work depends on 2.1.04, do not update the firmware. xTool publishes no downgrade path for the P2 or the F2 family.

What LightBurn says

  • October 21, 2026 xTool post: LightBurn says it has been working closely with xTool's software team, that 2.2 brings improved support for the F1 and P2 and preliminary support for the F2 series, that 'Support varies by machine, firmware, and feature', that camera support is not currently available on machines running the latest xTool firmware, and that it is 'exploring support for newer machines like the P3 and X1 in a future release'.
  • LightBurn made 2.2.00 its official release on October 19, 2026. Its changelog lists network support for the F1, F1 Lite, F1 Ultra, F1 Ultra 2, F2, F2 Ultra, F2 Ultra Single, F2 Ultra UV, P2 and P2S and 'xTool cloud credential updates to support new firmware', and its announcement calls the expanded xTool support a Labs feature 'in need of a bit more testing'.
  • The announcement adds autofocus for P2 and P2S lasers with IR rangefinders and multi-source jobs on the F1 and F1 Ultra. LightBurn's xTool page, with a support list still dated October 6, marks the F1, F1 Ultra and P2S supported, lists the F1 Lite, F2 family and P2 as functional but needing further testing, lists the P1, P3, M1, M1 Ultra, M2, Retail Marker and MetalFab as unsupported, says xTool's built-in cameras are not yet supported in LightBurn, and says some recent P2 and P2S firmware does not support camera use in LightBurn. As read on October 22, the list no longer includes the F1 Ultra 2 that the 2.2.00 changelog names.
  • Notice dated June 29, 2026, still in LightBurn's documentation on October 22, now directly below its instructions to re-add xTool devices set up before 2.2: recent firmware updates removed LightBurn support from the xTool P2S, P3, F1, F1 Ultra, F1 Lite, F2, F2 Ultra and F2 Ultra UV, and owners should hold off on the firmware update or go back to the previous firmware. The list does not name the P2 or the F2 Ultra Single.
  • By October 22, LightBurn had rewritten the xTool section of that troubleshooting page. For an xTool device set up before 2.2 or showing a grbl icon, it says to make sure you know where your Material Library is, add the device with the updated 2.2 directions, load the Material Library from the old device if you have one, and delete the older device; it says the older .lbdev (grbl) setup should not be used for xTool devices in 2.2.
  • During Early Access, RC-3 (September 30, 2026) extended xTool network support to the F1, F2 and P2 series and RC-6 (October 12) added the credential update; RC-8 (October 16) was the last release candidate.

What xTool says

  • Press release dated October 21, 2026: LightBurn 2.2 brings enhanced support for the F1, P2 and S1 and preliminary support for the F2; compatibility 'is also planned' for the newly announced X1, with more products 'expected to follow' and no date. It lists network connectivity for the F1, F2 and P2, multi-source jobs on the F1 and F1 Ultra and autofocus on P2 and P2S machines with infrared rangefinders, and says camera functionality is not currently supported on machines running the latest xTool firmware. LightBurn's October 21 post does not name the S1.
  • System notice updated October 10, 2026: after the latest online-enabled firmware, the F1, F1 Lite, F1 Ultra, F2, F2 Ultra, F2 Ultra Single, F2 Ultra UV, P2 and P2S support a network connection with LightBurn 2.2.00 or later. Its March 16 version told LightBurn users they could delay the upgrade.
  • The same notice says the F1, F1 Lite, F1 Ultra, M1 Ultra and P2S may have mobile-app connection problems after the update, and that new-protocol firmware needs xTool Studio 1.4 or later.
  • Firmware page updated October 12, 2026: xTool Creative Space and xTool Studio 1.6 and below can stop working from P2S firmware 40.22.011, F1 40.51.020.04, F1 Lite 40.55.020.04, or F1 Ultra 40.52.016.05 (Class 4) and 40.53.007.05 (Class 1). LightBurn is no longer on that list; it was when this guide checked the page on September 22.
  • Downgrades run in xTool Studio above version 1.4 over a USB cable. The page lists downgrade versions for the F1, F1 Lite, F1 Ultra, M1 Ultra and P2S, and none for the P2 or the F2 family.
  • FAQs updated October 12 and 13, 2026: the F2 FAQ answers 'Yes' to LightBurn, and the F2 Ultra and F2 Ultra UV pages name LightBurn V2.2.0 or later. The P3 FAQ (August 19, 2026) still says LightBurn is not supported, and the P2 FAQ (November 28, 2025) still says LightBurn does not support the P2's camera, autofocus or framing, against the autofocus in xTool's October 21 release.
Where the sources differ: xTool's October 10 notice points nine models to LightBurn 2.2, and LightBurn's 2.2.00 changelog lists ten, adding the F1 Ultra 2, a model its own xTool support table, still labeled October 6, no longer lists. On the X1, LightBurn says it is exploring support for a future release while xTool says compatibility is planned; neither gives a date. Only xTool's October 21 release names the S1; LightBurn's post does not, though its table lists it as supported. LightBurn's documentation disagrees with itself: its June 29 hold-off notice, a list that includes the P3 and leaves out the P2 and F2 Ultra Single, now sits directly below its instructions to re-add xTool devices set up before 2.2 and beside a newer xTool page that marks most of these models supported and the P3 unsupported; that page says xTool's built-in cameras are not yet supported, its table blames only some recent P2 and P2S firmware, and LightBurn's October 21 post limits the camera gap to xTool's latest firmware. xTool also disagrees with itself: its firmware page, updated October 12, lists xTool Studio 1.6 and below among the software that fails after the update, while its October 10 notice says new-protocol firmware needs Studio 1.4 or later; and its P2 FAQ (November 28, 2025) says LightBurn cannot use the P2's autofocus, while its October 21 release says autofocus works on P2 and P2S machines with infrared rangefinders. xTool's P2/P2S LightBurn setup guide (updated March 5, 2025) still describes the older setup. The Crafty Catsman has not run LightBurn 2.2 with any xTool machine.

Use LightBurn when

  • Your exact laser and controller are supported and you want deeper layout control.
  • You need kerf habits, material tests, production layers, and repeatable shop files.
  • You run more than one laser brand and want a portable workflow.
First project

First LightBurn test job: safe beginner workflow

This is not a universal cut recipe. It is a controlled workflow for learning LightBurn without wasting material, damaging a machine, or teaching a beginner to press Start too early.

1

Identify the machine

Confirm whether your laser is GCode, DSP, or Galvo and whether it needs Core or Pro. LightBurn support depends on the controller and firmware, not just the brand badge.

2

Add the device correctly

Try Find My Laser for supported USB machines, but do not assume detection is universal. If it fails, create the device manually or import the vendor/device profile.

3

Use scrap and starting settings

Do not begin with a customer piece. Use manufacturer starting settings for your wattage, lens, material, thickness, focus, and air-assist setup.

4

Create two simple layers

Use one layer for text or a filled test shape and one layer for a score or cut. The layer settings, not the layer color alone, control speed, power, mode, passes, and air assist.

5

Preview, frame, and focus

Preview the job order, travel moves, and cut sequence. Frame on scrap, confirm focus, and usually engrave before cutting so loose parts do not shift.

6

Ventilate and monitor

Confirm exhaust, enclosure/interlocks, wavelength-appropriate eye protection, air assist, and material safety before pressing Start. Never leave the laser unattended.

Production habits

LightBurn features worth learning before paid work

LightBurn becomes valuable when you stop treating it as a Start button and begin using it as a repeatable production system.

01

Layers and cut order

LightBurn color layers separate fill engraving, line scoring, cutting, and tool layers. A practical rule: engrave first and cut last because a cut-free part can shift.

02

Kerf offset

Kerf is the material removed by the beam. For boxes, inlays, ornaments, and press-fit parts, cut a test slot, measure the fit, adjust kerf offset, and save the setting.

03

Material tests

Run a material test grid before trusting a recipe from YouTube, Reddit, or a seller chart. Lens, focus, material supplier, moisture, air assist, and real optical power all matter.

04

Camera workflow

LightBurn improved camera calibration in 2.0 and added newer AprilTags calibration paths as Labs work. Built-in vendor cameras are not always accessible, as the P2/P2S caveat shows.

05

Nesting and templates

Use nesting as a version-sensitive feature, and build repeatable .lbrn2 templates with material libraries, notes layers, and file names that include material, thickness, and date.

06

Troubleshooting habits

Most first-week pain comes from detection, profiles, coordinates, origin, camera access, USB/network stability, or vendor automation that LightBurn cannot control.

Safety first

Safety, ventilation, PPE, and materials

LightBurn controls a laser; it does not make the laser safe. Follow your machine manufacturer's instructions, use proper wavelength-rated eye protection, plan ventilation, keep fire risk in view, and never leave a running laser unattended.

Do not skip the material check: avoid PVC, vinyl, unknown plastics, suspicious coatings, and anything with unclear additives. If the material or fumes are unknown, stop and verify before cutting or engraving.

Amazon Support Gear

LightBurn Workflow Support Gear

LightBurn helps dial in the software side, but safe laser work still depends on machine-specific eye protection, exhaust, and cleanup PPE. Match eyewear to your laser wavelength and optical-density requirement; no single pair is universal.

FAQ

LightBurn 2026 FAQ

Is LightBurn worth learning in 2026?

Yes if your machine/controller is supported and you want deeper layout, layer, material-test, and cross-machine workflow control. Use vendor software when proprietary features are required.

What is the current stable version of LightBurn?

LightBurn 2.2.00. LightBurn made it the official release on October 19, 2026: its release server now points its latest release to 2.2.00, and its announcement says '2.2 is out now'. It replaced 2.1.04, a patch release published August 11, 2026. LightBurn's license FAQ says a key cannot run versions released after its update period ends, so 2.2.00 needs a key whose update period had not ended by October 19, 2026; older versions stay on LightBurn's release server (checked October 19, 2026).

Is LightBurn 2.1 final?

Yes. LightBurn 2.1 is an official release; its last build, 2.1.04, was published August 11, 2026. LightBurn 2.2.00 replaced it as the current official release on October 19, 2026 (checked October 19, 2026).

Do I need LightBurn Core or Pro?

Core is for supported GCode devices. Pro supports GCode plus DSP and Galvo devices.

How much does LightBurn cost?

Core is listed at $99 USD and Pro at $199 USD; update renewal is $40 USD as of May 4, 2026.

Is LightBurn a subscription?

No. LightBurn says the license is not a subscription; updates after the included period require renewal, but compatible released versions continue to work.

Does LightBurn support Linux?

Current LightBurn 2.x supports Windows 10+ and macOS 11+; Linux is no longer supported in current 2.x releases.

Does LightBurn work with the xTool P3 or X1?

No. xTool's P3 FAQ (updated August 19, 2026) says the P3 works with xTool Studio on a PC only and does not support LightBurn. The P3 is not on xTool's October 10, 2026 list of models that connect to LightBurn 2.2 over the network or in LightBurn's 2.2.00 network list, and LightBurn's xTool page (support list dated October 6, 2026) lists it as unsupported. For the X1, xTool's October 21, 2026 press release says compatibility is planned, with additional products expected to follow and no date, and LightBurn's October 21 xTool post says it is exploring support for newer machines like the P3 and X1 in a future release; LightBurn's xTool support table has no X1 entry.

Does LightBurn work with xTool P2/P2S?

It depends on the firmware and the LightBurn version. xTool's system notice, updated October 10, 2026, says the P2 and P2S support a network connection with LightBurn 2.2.00 or later after the latest online-enabled firmware. LightBurn made 2.2.00 its official release on October 19, 2026 and lists P2 and P2S network support, plus autofocus for P2 and P2S lasers with IR rangefinders, as Labs features that need more testing; its xTool page says some recent P2 and P2S firmware does not support camera use in LightBurn. LightBurn's notice dated June 29, 2026 still lists the P2S and advises holding off on firmware updates (xTool's P2S threshold is 40.22.011). xTool lists a USB downgrade for the P2S but none for the P2. xTool's P2 FAQ and P2/P2S LightBurn guide still describe flat-material use without the camera, autofocus or framing, while xTool's own October 21, 2026 press release says 2.2 autofocuses P2 and P2S machines with infrared rangefinders. On October 21 both companies also said camera support is not currently available on machines running the latest xTool firmware.

Does LightBurn still work with the xTool F1, F1 Ultra, or F1 Lite?

Yes, if the LightBurn version matches the firmware. xTool's system notice, updated October 10, 2026, says the F1, F1 Lite and F1 Ultra support a network connection with LightBurn 2.2.00 or later after the latest online-enabled firmware, and warns that the mobile app may have connection problems after the update. LightBurn made 2.2.00 its official release on October 19, 2026 and lists network support for all three, plus multi-source jobs on the F1 and F1 Ultra, as Labs features; its June 29, 2026 notice still lists all three and advises holding off on firmware updates. xTool's firmware page (updated October 12, 2026) gives the update thresholds, F1 40.51.020.04, F1 Lite 40.55.020.04 and F1 Ultra 40.52.016.05 (Class 4) or 40.53.007.05 (Class 1), and a downgrade version for each.

Does LightBurn work with xTool F2?

Both companies now say yes, with LightBurn 2.2 or later, and both call that support preliminary in their October 21, 2026 statements. xTool's F2 FAQ, updated October 12, 2026, answers 'Yes', and its October 10, 2026 system notice names LightBurn 2.2.00 or later on the latest online-enabled firmware. LightBurn made 2.2.00 its official release on October 19, 2026 and lists F2 network support as a Labs feature that needs more testing, while its June 29, 2026 notice still lists the F2 under its hold-off advice. xTool lists no firmware downgrade path for the F2, so test 2.2 on your own files before updating.

Does LightBurn work with xTool F2 Ultra or F2 Ultra UV?

Yes, with LightBurn 2.2.0 or later, according to both companies, though both call F2-series support preliminary in their October 21, 2026 statements. xTool's F2 Ultra Q&A and its F2 Ultra UV FAQ, both updated October 13, 2026, name LightBurn V2.2.0 or later, and the UV FAQ adds that other third-party software is not currently supported. LightBurn made 2.2.00 its official release on October 19, 2026 and lists network support for the F2 Ultra, F2 Ultra Single and F2 Ultra UV as a Labs feature that needs more testing; its June 29, 2026 notice still lists both the F2 Ultra and the F2 Ultra UV.

Can LightBurn use my xTool laser's built-in camera?

Not on xTool's latest firmware, according to both companies. LightBurn's October 21, 2026 xTool post says camera support is not currently available on machines running the latest xTool firmware, and xTool's press release the same day says camera functionality is not currently supported on those machines. LightBurn's xTool documentation says xTool's built-in cameras are not yet supported, its support table blames only some recent P2 and P2S firmware, and xTool's P2 FAQ says LightBurn cannot use the P2's camera, autofocus or framing, so the sources differ on how far the gap reaches. Because xTool says the LightBurn network connection needs its latest firmware, plan camera placement in xTool Studio.

What materials should I not cut with a laser?

Avoid unknown plastics and materials that release dangerous gases/dust, including PVC, PVB, PTFE/Teflon, chromium VI leather, beryllium oxide, and halogenated materials.

Why won’t LightBurn find my laser?

Common reasons include missing drivers, another app already connected, networked devices requiring manual setup, or Marlin controllers needing manual setup.

What do colors mean in LightBurn?

Colors assign objects to layers/processes; they are not final output colors. Objects on the same layer share the same settings.
